The weather is grim- the sky is grey, the air is cold, and a light drizzle spatters against your face. The muddy trail you are following soon comes to an opening in the thick forest, before your rises a massive cliff of grey stone. A single rectangular opening sits where the cliff meets the ground, at the end of this well worn path. This is the entrance to your new home. As you make your way to the fortress, you begin to remember shards of your former life: who you were, where you are from. You don't remember how you came to travel here, or why you began your journey, all you know is that now you feel drawn towards the cavern, to see what it holds, and to see what you can find.

The opening leads to a well hewn cavern that leads to the innards of the fortress. Inside the place is damp, poorly lit, and smells faintly of burning tar. The faint sound of metal on stone can be heard in the distance. A number of friendly dwarves greet you as they go about their way, carrying barrels of beer and pick axes. Soon one leads you to a small room with only a door and a small wooden bed.

“Welcome to the fortress! We are always glad to to have some new hands to work in the mines!” the dwarf says as it hands you a pick axe before it goes on its merry way.

There is little here at this outpost, but even the smallest fortress is capable of great things. While survival will be hard and require an extraordinary effort, and if you band together and work hard, the future of this fortress is in your hands.

Hi ho, hi ho.

You don't have much when you arrive at the fortress. Your clothes have been replaced with poor quality linen and wool clothes, and any supernatural powers you once had have disappeared, and your only possessions are the hard wooden bed in your small, 9x9 stone room, a good-quality pick-axe and one trinket from home that you found in your pockets.

The dwarves that inhabit this place are friendly but generally clueless about the outside world; all they care about it mining and making more beer. You find too that mining has become considerably more important in your mind, as a strange pull attracts you to the small, dark, and dangerous tunnels that lead deeper into the earth. Fortunately, you seem to be able to handle this pick axe naturally, able to swing it like it were a third arm (or first, arm, if you lack them), no matter what the strength of your character may be. You also better get used to beer too, since what little clean water there is in the stockroom is reserved to sooth the injured and sickly.

There is little in the fortress besides stone, beer, dwarves, and the occasional log dragged in from the outside. There is enough food to keep you from starving, but never enough to stop you from being hungry. Survival will be tough and the fortress is poor. It will be up to the players to develop the fortress and guide its future through disaster, conflict, hard times, rampaging demons, the machinations of nearby civilizations, and possibly a marauding hoard or two. Using what resources that are available from the depths of the earth as well as the imagination and ingenuity of their characters, the players can grow, build, and ultimately shape the future of the fortress.

Fortress RP is a community driven panfandom roleplay where the players given the freedom develop a small, backwater dwarven fortress as well as explore the mysteries that lay in the ground below it.

The setting is inspired by the ideas of construction, exploration, and danger found in games such as Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, and Terreria as well as concepts from other general fantasy and dwarf-based worlds.
